Our Character Blogs from Holes

Looking back on the semester, we did some great things! One of the best was creating "character blogs" for the characters we liked (and didn't like) from Holes.

Just so you don't forget where your favorite character blogs are--here are the addresses:

Stanley: stanleyholes.blogspot.com
Mr. Sir: MrSir-holes.blogspot.com
Elya Yelnats: elyaholes.blogspot.com
Madame Zeroni: madamezeroniholes.blogspot.com
Zero: zeroholes.blogspot.com
X-Ray: x-rayholes.blogspot.com
Kate Barlow: kissinkateholes.blogspot.com
Sam: samholes.blogspot.com

Nice work! I really enjoyed reading your posts.

Our Messages to the World

As a class, we have read Lois Lowry's novel Number the Stars. In this novel, a young man named Peter writes a message to the world on the eve of his execution for participation in the Danish Resistance Movement to the Holocaust. Here are our messages to the world, inspired by Peter's dream of more peaceful and tolerant future.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears

All around the world, children learn fairy tales from a very young age. They sit in the laps of their mothers, fathers, brother, sisters, aunts, uncles, and grandparents who tell these magical stories about worlds where everyone lives "Happily Ever After." In order to become a strong reader, it is important to become familiar with English fairy tales, as these stories are often referred to in literature. Understanding the cultural context will help you better understand these allusions. Below I have a video of my husband telling a common fairy tale, "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" to our two daughters. Since he speaks quite rapidly, I have also attached a transcript so that you can follow along as you listen. Enjoy!

Transcript of Goldilocks and the Three Bears
Okay, should I tell you a story? Okay, here goes.

Once upon a time, three bears lived in a cottage in the middle of the forest. One morning the Mama Bear made the Papa Bear and the Baby Bear some porridge. She dished up a bowl for her and for Papa Bear and for Baby Bear and then she said, “This porridge is too hot. Let’s go for a walk while it cools.” And they said, okay, so they all took off to go for a walk.

Well, shortly thereafter, a little girl named Goldilocks came wandering along. (And Talia just bumped her head.) And Goldilocks, she smells porridge, she says “Mmmmmm, smells good.” And so she went, she knocked on the door (knock, knock, knock), but nobody answered. So she opened the door, crrrrrreak, and she went inside, and she sat down at the first big, great-big bowl of porridge, and she took a bite and she said, what did she say?

TOO HOT! Yeah, And then she went to the next bowl, and she took a big bite from the next bowl and she said, TOO COLD. And then she went to the next bowl and she took a bite from the next bowl and she said JUST RIGHT. And she ate it all gone, gobbled it all up.

Well, after that she was kind of tired, so she went into the next room and she saw three chairs. First she sat in the great big Papa Bear chair, and she sat down, and what did she say? Too.... (Too Big) TOO HARD. And then she sat down in the Mama Bear chair, and she said too.... (Do the Baby Bear's bed. Naw, that comes next.) TOO SOFT. Too Soft, yeah. And then she sat down in the Baby Bear chair and she said just… JUST RIGHT. And then guess what happened? It cracked. The chair broke right in two. And she said, Oops, I guess I better find another place to rest.

So she went into the bedroom and she jumped in the first great big papa bear bed that she saw, and she said TOO HARD. Yeah, and then she jumped in the great big Mama Bear bed and she said TOO SOFT. And then she kind of had to pull herself out of the great big Mama Bear bed and she climbed in the Baby Bear bed and she said, JUST RIGHT. That’s right, just right. And she fell fast asleep. Can you snore like Goldilocks?

Well, while she was sleeping in Baby Bear’s bed, Mama Bear and Papa Bear and Baby Bear came home. Papa Bear went to his bowl and said, “Somebody’s been eating my porridge.” Mama Bear went to her bowl and she said, “Somebody’s been eating my porridge.” Baby Bear went to his bowl and said, “Somebody’s been eating my porridge and ate it all up.”

Well, after that they went into the front room and Papa Bear said, “Somebody’s been sitting in my chair.” And Mama Bear went and she said “Somebody’s been sitting in my chair.” And Baby Bear went and said “Somebody’s been sitting in my chair and broke it! Mama Bear, Papa Bear, Don’t you see what’s going on here?”

So then they went into the bedroom and Papa Bear said, “Someone’s been sleeping in my bed. And Mama Bear said, “Someone’s been sleeping in my bed.” And Baby Bear said, “Someone’s been sleeping in my bed and look, there she is!”

And with that Goldilocks woke up with a start, and you know what, she was so scared! What did she say? Ahhhh! And she jumped out the window, weeee! And she ran away, as fast as she could go, And that’s the end of that story.

Daughter: No, you have to do the rest of that story.

Oh, maybe before she ran away, she helped Mama Bear make some more porridge, and she helped Papa Bear fix Baby Bear’s chair, and she helped Baby Bear make the bed, huh. And after that they became really good friends, and she came over for porridge on a regular basis, but she always made sure she asked before she ate it, huh.

That’s the end.

And they all lived happily ever after!
